A PEEK INSIDE FAMILY KEMPEN-LOS

AN INTIMATE LOOK INTO THEIR FAMILY LIFE, CREATIVITY, AND WHAT BEING AT HOME REALLY MEANS

We had the special opportunity to help design the nursery and select newborn essentials for little Edie, the youngest daughter of William Los and Daniëlle Kempen-Los. At the end of September, they welcomed their second daughter, completing their family, with Billy proudly taking on the role of big sister.

What started as shared values around aesthetics, design, and conscious living quickly evolved into a heartfelt family story. A conversation about parenthood, creativity, and what “home” really means when a family grows.

At home with the Kempen-Los family

When Daniëlle reached out to shape Edie’s nursery, the connection with this creative duo was immediate. They share a love for design and refinement: William as a model for top fashion houses such as Armani, Louis Vuitton, Tommy Hilfiger, and American Vintage, Daniëlle as a stylist and creative director for brands and magazines from Vogue and Closed to Marc O’Polo and Tommy Hilfiger.

Since becoming parents, they moved from Amsterdam to Haarlem, closer to nature and the sea. A place where calm and space go hand in hand with their creative lives, and where family life unfolds gently. Their home reflects this evolution: stylish, personal, and warm. We are proud that Quax is part of this special space.

A home that radiates calm

What do you consider important when creating spaces for your children?

After the busy city life, the couple intentionally created more breathing space. Haarlem feels like an extension of their values. Calm and positivity form the foundation of their lives and this carries through into their children’s rooms. Daniëlle strongly believes that a bedroom should be a place where a child can be themselves. Playing is welcome, but always in balance.

In Billy's room stands a bookshelf made by William, where a story is chosen each night. A basket full of soft toys, shelves with little treasures and found objects that change over time. Edie’s room feels softer, quieter. Warm hues, round shapes, and a buttery yellow glow that captures the light.

A bedroom should also be a place of calm, where a child feels safe, can retreat, and fully be themselves. Playing and toys are part of it, of course, but always in balance.

Two rooms, two stages

For Edie, the couple deliberately chose the Yume room. They share what drew them to these collections and why they fit so well with their family:

The Yume collection aligns perfectly with Edie’s gentle beginnings. The rounded shapes enhance the serene atmosphere of her room and contribute to a sense of calm and security—a little world where softness and positivity take center stage.

For Billy, now four and full of energy, Hai No Ki felt like a natural choice. They found their way to this collection well before this collaboration. Timeless and sturdy, it allows room for her growing personality and her little collections that constantly change—a room that grows with her.

“Edie is starting to see better and always becomes happy when I place her under the little felt birds—especially when her big sister adds real bird sounds.” – Daniëlle

A family in motion

How has your dynamic as a couple changed as your family grows?

With two children, family life feels different; they share openly. Where it was once primarily about being a couple with one child, it now requires more organization. They admit that the family sometimes feels almost like a small business. Especially now that Edie is so little and Daniëlle is breastfeeding, they divide themselves more often: Daniëlle with Edie, William with Billy. “Not necessarily negative, but it does require extra effort for us as a couple,” they explain.

That’s why they intentionally create moments for themselves. Since Billy started school, they schedule mornings or afternoons together: walks, coffee, making plans. Evening outings will come back later.

Creativity Meets Parenting

How does your creative life influence the way you parent?

When asked about creativity and parenting, they share that both work as freelancers with irregular schedules. Work comes in waves—sometimes quiet days filled with drawing, crafting, and shared breakfasts; sometimes hectic periods where they return to the laptop after bedtime.

That’s why small rituals are sacred. Eating together. Reading in bed. Anchoring moments.

Parenthood has deepened their creative work. They live more patiently, consciously, and find inspiration in the smallest moments.

Live in the moment, live with the chaos. No matter how hard, exhausting, or frustrating it can be, the most special moments arise from unexpected situations. That inspiration is, for me, the purest form.

The story behind Edie

What inspired you when choosing her name? Did you consider how it would fit with Billy, or how did you approach a “second name”?

On the question of how they chose the name Edie, they explain that it wasn’t an obvious choice. They had loved the name for years, but it never felt realistic, as a friend’s daughter already carried it. During the pregnancy, when no other name stuck, they called their friends—and with their blessing (and encouragement), it felt immediately right. Their friends considered it an honor.

Billy and Edie didn’t need to match, but the coincidence that “Bill” and “Ed” form a duo secretly delights them. Billy Gray, her full name, suits her energetic, tomboy personality. Edie received Elena as a middle name—softer and more feminine. Daniëlle felt that difference already during pregnancy, but only time will show how Edie will carve out her own place.

An intense start

Daniëlle, you were very open about the challenging start surrounding Edie’s birth. How did this period bring you closer as a family, and what did it teach you?

Looking back, Daniëlle describes Edie’s birth as special, but also intense. At 41 weeks, she was induced and closely monitored due to her previous C-section. The days before required patience and surrender.

“It just shows that every birth is so different and cannot be controlled. Nature and the baby do exactly what they want, and my only power is surrender. A mental puzzle that fortunately, doesn’t confuse me, but shows me how strong I am. The choice for a planned C-section after a previous one is easy to make, but I feel in everything that this is not our path.” – Daniëlle, via her Instagram - read the complete birth story here.

What made that period special was the unexpected calm. Daniëlle’s mother cared for Billy at home, allowing William and Daniëlle to be together in a world temporarily no bigger than the hospital room. Check-ups, small walks, long conversations—just the two of them and the life on the way. A gentle foundation before their family transformed again.

THEIR NURSERY SELECTION: INSPIRED BY CALM AND POSITIVIY

For Edie, they deliberately chose an environment that radiates calm. Soft colors, warm materials, and rounded shapes give the nursery a sense of security. The Yume collection fits perfectly with this vision.

THE FINISHING TOUCH

Despite their on-the-go life, it’s often the quiet moments that linger the most: mornings when the world pauses, evenings spent closing the day together and asking each other about the favorite moment of the day. A ritual Billy now asks for herself, and one we at Quax are proud to be part of.

With thanks to William & Daniëlle for their openness, trust, and honesty. We are grateful to be part of their story and their home.
